During the Spring 2023 semester, painting students at Summit High School (SHS) studied with Seattle local and Breck Create Artist-in-Residence, Julian Peña. Energized by their learning of Japanese folklore, art techniques and history, students developed the exhibition theme of The Stranger Things. Curated by the SHS National Art Honors Society, the exhibition includes inventive work inspired by stories old and new, as well as some that are specific to mountain life. Stories are an important part of popular culture, offering insight into people’s fears and the state of society…and they’re also good fun! Inspired by traditional Japanese painting, known as Nihonga, and using a variety of media including some AI Art technologies, The Stranger Things is filled with delight and intrigue.
