Breck Create’s two-day commemoration of Day of the Dead begins with a community gathering interlacing art, music and dance in joyful celebration of departed friends and family. Explore our newest exhibition on campus: Santos y Simbolismo: Vicente Telles, Alberto Palma and Santiago Vera Ovalle presents interconnected visual narratives about the migration of people, ideas, and beliefs through mixed media artwork.

A candlelight vigil beckons departed spirits to return to Earth for a brief visit. It is a time of remembrance, sacred tradition, love, and bringing communities together. Dr. Renee Fajardo of MSU Denver will speak on the ceremonial importance of Día de Muertos. Attendees will light candles to carry as the Aztec dance group Huitzilopochtli leads a procession through the Arts District Campus. Participants are welcome to bring pictures or tokens of loved ones with them for the procession. What follows is the traditional danza of Quetzalcóatl, god of air and wisdom, who appears most often as a plumed serpent. Quetzalcóatl symbolized death and resurrection to the Mayans and Aztecs, who linked him to dawn, the morning star, and Venus. The ancient god was said to have resurrected humankind from the underworld with his own blood.

Este ritual comienza con una vigilia a la luz de las velas que incita a los espíritus difuntos a regresar a la Tierra para una breve visita. Es un tiempo de recuerdo, sagrada tradición, amor y unión de las comunidades. La Dra. Renee Fajardo, de la MSU de Denver, hablará sobre la importancia ceremonial del Día de los Muertos. Los asistentes podrán encender velas y llevarlas consigo, al mismo tiempo que el grupo de danza azteca Huitzilopochtli encabeza una procesión por el Campus del Distrito de las Artes.  Los participantes podrán traer fotografías o recuerdos de sus seres queridos para la procesión. A continuación, se presentará la danza tradicional de Quetzalcóatl, dios del aire y la sabiduría, que aparece más a menudo como una serpiente emplumada. Quetzalcóatl simbolizaba la muerte y la resurrección para los mayas y aztecas, quienes lo relacionaban con el alba, el lucero del alba y Venus.
